Re: KR250 growly symptoms, maybe the clutch ?

I tried to determine which way to install the main shaft snap ring, I figured compressing the clutch springs would thrust the shaft towards the left and so I installed the sharp edge of the snap ring facing the right .

I fixed the clutch  no drag  I think it was the missing shim and snap ring behind the clutch gear using up all the clutch actuator movement without releasing the clutch mostly. Found some washers underneath the springs , I couldn't find any reference to them so I left them out,and cleaned off all the oil I soaked the plates with, so now the clutch works like it should. The engine idles without any funny noises, but I still have the growl at speed that goes away when I slow to under 20kph. I think its the rubber chain guide, ran out of time to investigate. I'll cut it off and go for a ride when the weather permits. I might have to fit a bigger rear sprocket for the chain to clear the swingarm. Or maybe the speedo drive? On another note, I bought a new front drive sprocket but it fits poorly , I thought that it could make the growly sound, but there is no way to fix it, goofy design really.

If nothing else you've at least got the clutch sorted. As for the growly sound, could it be a wheel bearing? Does it disappear when you are in another gear or is it gear independent, does it occur above 20 kph in neutral for instance?

The growl is speed dependent, it shows up after a run up then cruise, it does not go away with pulling in the clutch, or revving up the engine, it does not go away until I slow down to 20 kph. So I am narrowing it down to; the wheels, ( all new bearings ) brakes, speedo drive, speedo, output shaft, chain, chain guide rubber, sprockets. The speedo works great with no bouncing. There are no hot parts anywhere I can find showing friction or interference.

Only one way to find out....... lube the cable well and test!
If it is the cable, you've done a lot of extra work, but not for nothing. You've sorted the clutch and thus prevented potential serious damage to the engine.

It was the speedo cable all along!!!!!

Apparently the speedo cable did not like to be bent as much as it had to, to clear the Yamaha headlight cover    Removed the cable and no more growl  I'll do a reroute, and a good grease up or remove the cover. Now the bike needs some tuning , as it has a pretty good bog before it opens up. I will start a new thread as this one's done! (That giant H0nda/Yamaha front brake sure does work!)
