If the part numbers of the vital parts (cylinders, heads, ignition, exhausts etc are identical for the Japanese and export versions then perhaps all KRs really had 48 hp and 45 was a figure released for the Japanese market to "comply" with local regulations. The only 45 hp KRs may have been those supplied for official testing and approval; how likely were Japanese approval officials to walk into a dealer and pick a bike at random for a check to see whether the production bikes actually complied?

As Gerrit said, it could be like the "max 276bhp" Nissan Skylines that actually push out nearer 400 when you buy one.

I'm convinced it is the same thing with the KR-1 - all the bits affecting output are the same. The published details are:

JDM - 45ps at 10,000rpm, 3.7kgm at 8,500rpm
Australian - 55ps at 10,500rpm, 3.75kgm at 10,500rpm

I don't recall seeing any official quantified power and torque curves, so the two sets of figures quoted above could be from the same bike - it makes 45ps at 10,000rpm and 55ps at 10,500rpm!

As far as the KR250A goes, it could in similar fashion make 45ps at some engine speed and 48ps at a higher engine speed...
