Hello from Perth , Australia
I have been lucky enough to buy a KR 250a 1986 black and red
It might be the one doing the burnout on the KR 250.ORG page
all the fairings are missing as is the headlight
The frame is flawless, the motor seems to be freshly rebuilt and
sounds incredible. The previous owner was launched into a wall from
a broken throttle cable and thats why he sold it it scared him ha ha
If i can find the following parts or any advice on replacement bits
forks are bent so does anyone know of a different front end that fits
the bar risers need replacing . Il need a oil pump cover and a front sprocket cover and the rubber from the carbies to the airbox
its running on castrol R in the oil pump is that ok? (smells ok)
I spoke to an old racer of them and he said what about borrowing
someones original fairings and making moulds of them for everyone!

Nice ! Don't bother with fairings, leave it like this. 8)

Most parts are available secondhand - if you're patient - on Yahoo Auctions Japan. Even fairings, though the mid-panels are the hardest to find.

I bought a KR chassis which had a GPZ600R (I think) front-end fitted. Looks like stock KR, but none of the parts are interchangeable, you have to fit the whole thing.

I just got another one for $500 ! its an 84 red and black with all the fairings in good shape and the little jap indicators!

Now i have all the parts i need to make a really good original looking one har har hargh

The carbies are full of dog hairs but the tinker i bought it from said the motor ran when he stored it so it took me about half a second to start thinking about restoring both and having two good ones instead of just the one! (who can relate?)
The 84 one has what looks like a sensor or something where the 86 has choke cables going into the carbies whats that about?
All the bits that are rusty or broken or missing on one are good on the other ha ha i cant believe it! except airbox boot and oil pump cover
Once i figure out how to send pics il be posting my progress.

I took the good throttle cable off the 84 and cleaned out the carbies remembering from the forum to clean out the idle jet behind the main jet. I then changed the gearbox oil and took her (86)for a blat round the block.Within 2 laps of my block i had ascertained that the motor is strong with a good clutch and happily selecting gears . The new oil looked milky for a while then i realised it was tiny air bubbles and after checking again later found no contamination.
My next step is to swap the carbies and tank off the 86 and test the 84 engine before i decide to concentrate on one good one or restore both ! In two, thirty second laps of my neighborhood i had two, separate, old ducks in their bathrobes and slippers running after me with cameraphones and shaking fists! ha ha (sounds even better when the bottom silencer is missing!)when i can figure out how to post pictures il put up my progress

I just tested the 84 motor and after finally realising the bloody thing has no spark until the sidestand is up, BOOM she burst into life and settled into an idle, for the first time in years (judging by the level of mouse poop in the battery box!)
10 seconds later i give her a bit,BRING! BRING ! BRING ! woohoo!
sounds strong and crisp and plenty of go left in her!

Wife rips open sliding door"TURN THAT flip THING OFF ITS LATE AT NIGHT " yeah, yeah (one last BRING!),Cough,Cough(the homestead is a pea soup fog of two stroke smoke)
Tommorow i swap chains over then take 84 for a test round the block to check gears and clutch
It would appear i have found two good ones for a grand

I have decided to pull the engines out and then toothbrush clean and ground up resto on the 86 (the good motor deserves a good home).
In the manual, it says to remove the rear cylinder to get the motor out the frame . really?
Can anyone tell me if that is correct or no you actually can get the motor out without touching the top end (take out plugs ok i guess)

Youre never going to get the motor out without removing at least one barrel. Best to take them both off as a pair without removing the head (as Doug said, your better off not disturbing the head gasket if it's still holding well). This will also give you the chance to inspect the pistons and barrels, and clean up any carbon build-up on the pistons and in the ring grooves.

I managed to remove the motor from the frame without taking the top end off! (or the plugs)
Was not easy , if i had to do it again i would wrap some tape around the frame so it didnt get small scratches from the exhaust header bolts as she came out.
now if i could only remember how to put it back in!
ha ha ( i better pay attention to how i get out the 86 motor)

Take some pics or even a video when you put it back in (or take the next one out), will be useful for all us KR owners who've never had to do it yet... =D>

Basically, remove all mounting brackets and bolts from the frame ,
tilt the motor so the kickstart shaft is out of the frame slightly, then,
Rotate the engine almost completely upside down in the frame with the cylinders rotating towards the front wheel ,then wiggle her out ,keeping the engine as close to the top ,left corner of the frame.
The engine comes out from the right hand side of the bike , upside down, bottom out first , cylinders leave the frame last.
