just a quick line, after sitting in the corner of the garage for 2 years, after purchase as non runner due to suspected crank seal failure and not to sure how long it had stood prior no me obtaining it (at least a boat trip from Aus). put a battery on the old girl, filled the float chambers with mix, 2nd kick fired up and ran for a short while =D> . time to start stripping now. will keep you informed
strip continues

well while the frame is being cleaned and repainted i thought it was time to strip the engine to renew the suspect crank seals, I attacked the left side 1st well you have to start somewere, once apart was a bugger to release the crank bearing from the cover ( at least they are a good fit and have not been spinning in the case) i found the seals like new obviously they have been changed, maybe when the piston and barrel was done, also the stator has been rewound, i was suprised to see the internals in such good condition. so lets move on to the right side after a bit of a struggle getting the kick start shaft through the case bearing off it came, wow! new clutch plates seems in a previous life a lot of work has been done here. on removing the crankshaft dampers the problem was revealed, the area the the seals run was very badly pitted and corroded with rust. now what? off to my local engineering shop fo a solution
, machine 1 mm off the damper body and fit an oversize seal. now waiting for the work to be completed
. pics of stripped engine to follow.

well damper back all nice and corrosion free complete with o/s seals 55x40x7, hopefully start reassembing this weekend. frame now at the powder coaters, cleaned both wheels up this week looked lovely, then noticed the front wheel had a ding in it, lucky have a spare set but these had been painted and the smart arse used etch primer. more to follow.

frame should be back tuesday 21st will post pics, engine has been stripped and partially rebuilt, thats when the problems started. bolting the 2 half's of the crank cases together i noticed the cap head bolts were up to torque but not holding the cases together, bolts to long? streched? well out they come again grind off 2mm clean off sealant and refit bolts, now the fun starts, were did i put that shim for the kick start idler gear and the shims for the crankshaft centre gear?
oh! some one didnt fit them last time the engine was stripped. well back to the local friendly engineering shop, 1x 1mm 2x 1.5mm 1x 1.4mm shim and so on hopefully end of next week the engine will be rebuilt. pics to follow
By the way Tim thanks for the manual all those years ago lol. without it i would be knackered, i will give you 1st pickings on all the spares l have over when she's finished.

No problem Doug, glad I could help.
By the way, there shouldn't be any bits left over when you've finished.

Yeah, it was used on GPZ's of the era, but not exactly sure what models.
Sorry, I know that probably dosn't really help a lot.

Had a leaky anti-dive when I got my bike, but fitted Gpz600 seals which fitted ok.
