Cranks joined with chain or gears?

Post by Bogan »

Dumb question, but I've checked the parts book and can't see it. Are the cranks joined with gears (counter rotating) or a chain (rotate the same way)?

What page of the parts book can I find it on?

Cheers,

Both your ideas are partially correct. They are joined using gears, but they use 2 smaller gears (one on each crank) which drive a much larger gear mounted between them. You need to get yourself a workshop manual, as the parts book explains almost nothing.

As Scott said, you really need a manual for this, but if you've only got the parts book, the cranks are on page 6.

So both cranks turn the same direction via an idler gear, hmmmm anyone ever ditched the idler gears and counter rotated the front cylinder?
Is the gearbox/clutch strong in these?

That'd take so much re-engineering it's not even funny. For a start, the idler gear (refered to in the manual as the Clutch Gear) not only links the two cranks together, but also joins them both to the clutch and kick starter. It's pretty integral to the design.
As for the gearbox, I'm not really sure how much abuse it would put up with, but the clutch is reasonably hardy.

I havent pulled one apart so I was just thinking, have you got a pic for me please?

:-k
So the clutch has to spin backwards for the countershaft to spin forwards, with an idler gear in between the clutch and the cranks, the cranks must spin backwards? Is that correct?
