So I have started on the tank and cut the bottom out of it to the correct line I wanted.
Next I need to get some material for the rear sub-frame and get that fabricated.
I will also be cleaning up the tank and painting it for a smooth finish, ready to take a mould from.

So I've said I'm doing this as a comprehensive thread this year, so I thought I would just include an update on the chassis.
I have removed part of the rear sub-frame and cleaned up the surface area.
Notice I have left the main portion of the old sub frame, this is so I can use it as a jig, to keep the tank in position while I line up the new frame material.
I've also added two mounting lugs to each side of the frame to accommodate the new bolt on sub-frame.
I'll be making a start on the sub-frame this Saturday, so more update to follow soon.

this looks like its going to be interesting and a good project, remember luders while everyone seems to be restoring etc as far as i can see its like your willy its yours and you can wash it as fast as you want if that makes any sense
if you have a V5 you can have a daylight mot but if it was manufactured after 91 you need an electric horn and thats it, i used to run an ex race KR on the road

I wouldn't mind doing a restoration project one day and I'm sure I will, but for now, I wanted to do one more F250
Here's today's progress on the sub frame, should have it all finished by next Saturday.
I also have a day time MOT on my other race bike, but not sure I'll bother with this one.

If I may make a suggestion ?
since you are already cutting/welding the frame, change the rear suspension so you can fit longer shocks. gives you a wider choice and you can use one with more travel for more accurate suspension

That's good advice Jan, but I already have a rear shock lined up with height adjuster, so don't need to make changes to that area.

I weighed the frame in before I started working on it at 11.3kgs and when I finished with the sub-frame bolted on it weighed in at 10.2kgs.
Sub frame was made from 20mm 10swg aluminium box section for the top and 20mm 10swg aluminium tube for the lower struts.
I used 20mm solid bar and drilled 8mm holes for the parts which are bolted to the frame and the same material just tapped 8mm for the parts where the tail piece bolts to.
Here's some pics from today...
Next steps are to get all the paint off it and start making the tank finish good.

If kr1 frames are lighter than s and weight is a major issue why not mod one to take the 1s swinger?? .

I know a KR1 is lighter than a KR1S, but don't know if the actual frame is lighter. anyone ever weighted them ?
