with the clutch cover off when i press on the left or right side on the plates there seems to be a lot of sideways movement (plates move inside the basket) but apply slight pressure centrally on the push rod by finger and its not so bad is this down to bearing that the push rod goes through, clutch is noisy but i wouldn't say its loud

it's because the clutch isn't bolted onto the shaft, but simple held in place wth a circlips. after a while the aluminium from the clutch that slides over the shaft wears out a bit and that's the play you are feeling. nothing to worry about if it isn't too much.
