Fuel pipe

About to replace the fuel lines, but the off the shelf stuff seems to go rock hard after a few months nowadays (maybe the new petrol doesn't help).
Anyway I've got a few metres of silicone tube lying around. Does anyone have any advice as to how suitable this would be? I've found posts all over the internet some saying petrol eats silicone and some saying they've been using it for years! I've left a piece in petrol for a week now and it doesn't seem to have altered at all.
