Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
For your info Doug: Those rubber seals are glued in place on the "jet holders". I've stripped several sets of carbs before and not had to replace them (they seemed in good condition and hadn't come unglued). They seemed unaffected after several hours in a heated (about 60degC) ultrasonic cleaner, although I used only soapy water (not solvent). However, since they are used to seal against fuel, I imagine that a mild solvent would not do them harm (although do some research first, perhaps).bozbridge wrote:This bit:
It's not listed on the parts fiche. I was wanting to strip off and rebuild mine but was told the gasket at the top isn't a part you can get hold of. If there's some available I'd still like to have a go at it, didn't want to strip one rip a seal and have to give up on the carb
Regards,
James

Ah! Yes James you're right, there was a dab of sealant holding the rubber seals in place and mine were in good order so I re-used them..

Thanks for the info James.. handy to know I can strip that bit if needed and not worry.
Keep the pics going, good thread to read and great pics.

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Right - I've finally made the decision to get the frame and swing arm etc. powder coated. I know it's not as original as paint but it was relatively cheap and will be harder wearing. Also, given that the frame wasn't in the best shape I've seen, I think it's likely to give a smoother finish than paint. Here's an idea of what it was like beforehand and I'll post some pictures of 'after' once I get it back:-

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
It's been a while since I've updated this post so here goes -
After looking around on this and various other forums it seemed, as i had decided to go for powder coating on this occasion, that RAL 9006 was the colour to go for and the frame was taken to the local powder coaters to match the existing frame colour and that my understanding was that RAL 9006 was a good match. This is what I got back..
The guy said he thought it looked wrong but didn't think to call me..

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Anyway, in an attempt to keep a rather upsetting and long story short. They had ignored the "match the existing frame colour" part of the conversation and applied RAL 9006 without question. The error, I now know, is that the RAL identification is just a colour and doesn't take into account the amount of metallic hue that is also applied to the powder. It also seems that other powder manufacturers version of RAL 9006 DO have the metallic applied as standard. Here's a photo of the RAL 9006 applied to my frame next to another manufacturers RAL 9006 - spot the difference?

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Even worse - the company were insistent that the mistake was wholly mine and wouldn't release the frame unless I paid in full for the frame (in the incorrect colour) or I had paid again to have it changed.
To try and keep this brief i eventually ended up paying an additional £50 on top of the £130 I had already paid.
Moral of the story? Use a reputed powder coaters that specialise in motorcycle frames and make sure you view a colour swatch before you commit to a colour! My powder coaters couldn't find the swatches when I left the frame but assured me that they had done plenty of bike frames and knew what I wanted (and would match the existing frame). They also took my phone number and assured me they'd call if there was an issue.. Grrrr!
To be honest I wish I'd had it sprayed but it's done now and is intended for the track so it'll do (and actually looks ok now).

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Talking of being 'for the track' - I've now booked the bike in for the Classic Trackday on the 24th June (as usually organised by Practical Sportsbike magazine) so I'd better get moving on this one!!!
Also, please can anyone help out with my post in the engine section as I'm keen to get the barrels off for prep asap..

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Pisser Dave, these "generic" powder coaters(and blasters) really are hit and miss, a friend of mine just had a set of LC cases wrecked by a PC in Bedfordshire.
Do us all a favour and name n shame them.

Let's just say that if you're in the Long Eaton area - use the local powder coaters with caution!

Re: Swamp Thing - KR1 Track Bike
Unfortunately I'm lacking a set of KR1 wheels and the swingarm sleeve is as rusty as the rest of the bike.
If anyone has a spare set of KR1 wheels, preferably with the spacers, sprocket carriers, cush drive, speedo drive etc. please PM me with a price. Also after the swing arm sleeve clearly
Come to think of it I need loads of KR1 parts so if you have anything left over from a completed project please PM me..
