Dodgy Kips motor? CDI? battery? diode? reg/rect? its all gobbledygook to me but some people understand it ask tham a question here

Alternate ign curves

Post by scooble »

I've got a Zelltronic for my KR1 and was thinking of experimenting with the curves.
I'm aware that each engine ideally needs to be optimised for the type of tune and pipes fitted, but has anyone got any curves that give a general overall gain over the standard KR1 curve that they would like to share?

Are you running the 1 curve or the 1S curve? If the former, you might try the latter first, especially if you have an engine with 1S cylinders and spannies.

I have Micron GP Spannies and Bob Farnham tuned S cylinders. Not sure which curve comes pre-installed on the Zeeltronic

Just checked the Zeeltronic site, but it doesn't specify which curve is loaded as standard, just that it has a "store and load function for 2 ignition maps". As the site lists the unit for the 1S, however, I assume that the 1S curve is loaded as standard. Perhaps someone on the board with experience with the Zeeltronic can advise, otherwise send Zeeltronic an e-mail.

I had a look today and found the following standard data loaded into the unit;
Map#1
1200 - 13.5
3000 - 23
7500 - 25
10000 - 17
12000 - 7

Map#2
1500 - 15
3000 - 24.5
7500 - 26
10000 - 19
12000 - 9

The activated map was Map#1

Both maps are more advanced than the standard KR1S map

best thing to do is get it on a dyno Tricia with a base setup and the tweak it at the rpm where the power starts tailing off. Happy to send you my base curve if it helps.

Don't forget to check the KIPS switching point- shifting this may give an improvement as well.

yes please Ben, I'd like to get an idea of the kind of 'envelop' that works well for different KR setups.

Working in London all week except Wednesday, so will hook my laptop up and send you some screen shots of my config.

Before you go any further have you strobed the flywheel to make sure programmed advance =flywheel rotation?

Is that like checking the static advance?

it's knowing 10° programmed advance is in reality also 10°.

otherwise if for example you use someone else's curve that has 10° advance and would be on the safe side of detonation, could end up in reality being 15° advance and fall right into deto-territority.

I put a DTI on my pistons to estblish TDC, then worked outwhat the static advance is and marked both sides of the flywheel. I then put a socket and drill on my crank to turn over the engine to check the timing using a strobe, adjusted the correction in the Zeel programming before I started mine.
Hope that helps, will get the screenshots tomorrow for you Tricia.

if 10deg isn't actually 10deg, then I assume that there must be some physical misalignment caused by the pickup coil trigger edge being slightly out of line with actual TDC measured by a dial gauge.
Anyway, I haven't changed anything yet, but here's an illustration of the difference between the default zeel maps, Bens and the standard KR1S curve.
