Base / head Gaskets

Post by rc46 »

Do you guys install your gaskets dry? or spread some oil across the surfaces? I havent done a top end before, other gaskets on the cases ive allways coated them lightly in oil to give a good seal, but noticed that the head and base gaskets are fairly dry?

Cheers

HEad can be dry but the base gaskets should have a decent cement/sealant on both sides as they can pop out at the front of the cylinder.

cool as, That would be awsome! Dose it last long? I wont actually need it for a few weeks until the repair has been done, and i put the motor back together..

either way i can ping you nearer the time or if its one of these things that last's in a bag ill have some now.

By the way, i take it its just a thin layer as itll squish into the water ways etc yes?

Yep thats the stuff. Its as sticky as hell so don't get it on your hands and its not good for kids so don't force feed them the stuff  . That bond stuff Mr B is on about is excellent and you don't need a gasket with it. I use the bond stuff everywhere on the engine except for base and head gaskets.

i use it all the time on timing covers,sumps,etc...basically on machined faces....as its factory stuff it works....cos bmw have a BIG problem with corrosion on their painted parts...so we have shed loads of the stuff... :D

let it cure for an hour or so before you fire her up...

Mr B just to confirm, As i dont wana be stupid!! LOL I need the gaskets to get the right height for Head and barrels this stuff can be used along with gaskets YES? i think thats right,

But in addition it sounds like itll be good for when i put my new engines cases back together where there are no gaskets?

Cool
