KR1s-500 update

Post by r1-daz »

Hi all,i was going to wait until the engine was fully in but i thought the PROJECT section was a bit quiet lately.
Engine is fully rebuilt and just mocked up in the photo(so no emails to say its a bit close to the front wheel).
As you can see i'm going the 'underseat' route with the exhaust which hasn't been easy but i like symmetry where exhausts are concerned.
I've got new 'Boyesen Factory Racing' engine covers to go on to get rid of the h***a ones.
Should be up and running within a month [-X Didn't i say that last year!!!!
Anyway more photos when i progress a bit further.
Daz.

I like the finish on the frame, how did you do it?

The photo is a bit deceptive, the frame has been sand blasted so it was better for tig welding on to(It's actually as rough as hell).
I'll probably leave it like that until i've fully tested the bike just to keep an eye on the engine mount welds which can crack with the vibration from a CR500 engine.
When its all ok its going to be powder coated satin black.

Just got it back from the workshop.
Engine is fitted, exhaust was a bitch to fit!! Having trouble finding a suitable radiator to fit now,the one i modified at great expense is too big.
The front engine support is titanium, for 4 reasons:
1:Its very light.
2:Its very strong.
3:It does not corrode
4:There was an odd piece lying around so why not use it.

Its a slow process but i will finish it !!!

I couldn't make sense of the exhaust on the first pic. But now I see, that's some job  =D> . Alan.

Indeed, top work, think that's going to be mightily impressive when done.
The exhaust looks 'fun' to say the least.
The last time Liverpool Fc won the league, George Michael was black and Michael Jackson was straight or visa versa, it's that long ago I get confused.

Thanks,it was like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole #-o
The engine is actually sitting 10 mm off centre of the frame,which is such a small amount and the weight is so low down it won't affect the handling(I hope).There are 2 reasons for this;
1: It made the sprockets line up without modifying the sprocket carrier
2: It gave a bit more room to pass the pipe between the frame and engine.
The engine has got a large head steady on to stop it twisting in the frame, plus a substantial engine mount at the rear and i think it looks good without a cradle supporting it :-k

On the 1S I like two exhausts up one side. But would like Lomas pipes, so I've wondered if what you have done to yours could be done to the Lomas's ( cut & rotate ) & get two up the one side. Alan.

Bloody hell, Alan been having similar thoughts, just wish you could get lomas stainless pipes gp style ready done.

I'm really impressed with the layout of the exhaust and engine on this one.

I havn't really looked at a Lomas pipe so it would be difficult to give advice however i don't forsee a problem it's definately worth a go, nothing is impossible(the hammers just get bigger).
It's just a case of trail and error,if you're determined enough you'll do it =D>

I like your style, what is it a cr engine,do you need to re gear it internally?or can you win it on the front and back sprockets,
i made a harris magnum 2 sort of copy for a bandit 6,with ally tank, always wanted to make e braxed reynold 531 or cds2 tubed frame for the kr1s,just doing the footings for a backyard workshop, cheers fred

It's a 1989 CR500 engine which has been completely rebuilt.
As for gearing i'm running 15/38 tooth sprockets(standard is 14/53) which will give 120mph flat out but it's the way it gets there, white knuckles all the way!!!!!
You can put enduro wide ratio gears in the gearbox but the 500 doesn't need it because of the massive torque its got.
When i raced one with standard gearing, you just bang it in 3rd gear and stay there all day,it will even pull off the line in 3rd.

The story so far!!! :-({|=

Been held up trying to get a radiator(should be here tomorrow).
Rear spring has been at the powder coaters for 3 weeks now, they keep letting me down.
Just need to make a link pipe from the expansion to the tail-pipe,then extend the kickstart shaft and put an out-rigger support on it,put some fluids in,take some anabolic steriods then kick it over \:D/
And for you 2 stroke purists, i'm running it on Castrol R because it has a cast iron liner fitted.
PS: I know the rev counter is optimistic,CR500's only rev to 6800rpm
