Well ive bought a sprint steering damper from ebay for my kr1s and fitted it , im not sure how they are meant to fit or how much damper rod should be sticking out of the rear because this one is like a huge hydrolic ram and the damper rod touches my knee before i have even turned the steering!.Can anyone suggest makes and models of dampers which will fit my bike as i raced it the other week without one and even though i had no problems i feel i could push it a bit more if i knew the front was stable with a steering damper

i have a toby damper on my kr1. think its 140mm stroke. there is a thread about it on here somewhere

do you know the model or part number ?

stick a picture of your damper and I'll see if it looks like its mounted correctly.

K is there a swivel joint between the body and the mount to the frame?

I have one of them somewhere in the garage which used to be on my race bike, but the oil seal has gone in it. It takes a bit of messing around with the damper to get it to sit right on the bike. IIRC I had the fork clamp extended so I could move it further around the forks and used a swivel joint on the frame mount which I had to play around with as well (IIRC I made a bracket to lower the mounting so it was below the fairing mount and away from my knee) as I had the same problems you mentioned.

Took a bit of work to get right but it was worth the effort.

What you can see in the picture of the fixing is a bush we made but the bracket seems to move around alot (side to side,) as the bush sits on a rose joint mounted inside the mounting bracket,which acts like a pivot, do you think i should make the spacer bush smaller?

I'm trying to remember how I mounted mine. There was a rose jointed clamp, but IIRC I also fabricated a bracket to lower the damper so it was below the bracket I deff had an extension to the fork clamp welded onto the original to get it mounted further forward and around the fork.

I spent quite a bit of time messing around with it till it was right, then a month or so later the oil seal went and it left a large patch of oil on the garage floor. /bugger.

thinking about it. It was a rose jointed clamp mounted the opposite way up to the way the clamp on the body of the damper to the frame is mounted on yours.

You should be able to pick up loads of different types of clamps from evil bay or from a suspension specialist but mine was def the other way up from yours so the steering damper was below the point where it mounted to the frame.
