Piston Rings
Has anyone any idea if there's other piston rings that suit the 1s ?
The Z power price list has KR1s ones at £27 a set, but my mate in a bike shop was suggesting 2mm over size KMX 125 ones (giving 56mm bore) at only £6 a set !!!
Can't see it being able to work, but is would be a nice wee saving.
Is anybody able to cross reference the part nos ?

Re: Piston Rings
If I could find new rings for the original tandem KR at £27 a set, I'd buy 10 sets...Tambo wrote:Has anyone any idea if there's other piston rings that suit the 1s ? The Z power price list has KR1s ones at £27 a set
I get 2 or 3 emails a week asking where to buy rings and pistons. There ain't any left, I've tried contacts all over the planet. I got the last ones from Z-Power 2 years ago.
I got an old KR1/S piston and rings to compare but they're completely different. There's probably something off another bike (offroader, jetski or even non-K) that would do the job but I don't know how to find it. Is there anyone who specialises in just pistons/rings that could help me ?
I've got one of those CD-Roms that Kawasaki dealers use to cross-reference part numbers. Unfortunately it's from the USA and they don't really do strokers. I'll have a go though.Tambo wrote:Is anybody able to cross reference the part nos ?

you can always try here :
http://www.woessner-kolben.de/english/indexenglish.html
measure every detail from your piston and maybe they can find something ?
and if not, maybe if you order enough piston's they will make them for you ? seams like there are plenty off people looking for them ...

Is it just the KR that you struggle to get them, or is it KR1s as well ?
I restored a JCM trials bike a few years ago - nothing was available at all - and i found a piston ring specialist who had loads in stock. Got a set for under £10 delivered. He had all sizes, materials etc.
Think his business was actually vintage cars, I'll see if I've kept any info.

Re: Piston Rings
Part numbers for KR1/S piston/rings not recognised by my Kawasaki USA CD-Rom. There's a few two-stroke crossers, ATV's and jetski's listed but no KR's I'm afraid. Anyone got a copy of the data from a non-Yank dealer ?StrokerBoy wrote:I've got one of those CD-Roms that Kawasaki dealers use to cross-reference part numbers. I had a quick look on the link from JanBros, and a 2mm oversize KMX ring is listed the same as a standard KR1s, so it's looking promising on that front.
Will see if my mate can get a set sale or return to have a look at.
Have also been searching for the supplier I got the rings for my JCM from, but he seems to have vanished
Also stumbled across these folks - highly recommended by some blokes on a forum about restoring canal boat engines (funny where surfing takes you sometimes) - might be good for the KR if it's so different from other stock stuff.

Have you tried Prox ? They do loads of 2 stroke stuff, although mostly crossers - might be able to match something ?

That's what an evening of babysitting, and no shed time managed to turn up Will keep looking for that other ring bloke !!

I tried to talk to them at the Stafford Show but whenever I went their stand was empty. I've emailed them.Tambo wrote:Have you tried Prox ? They do loads of 2 stroke stuff, although mostly crossers - might be able to match something ?

Have you got a part number for the KR rings ?
I've been trawling through various Kawasaki sites looking for a cross reference for the 1s (with no joy), might as well double my chances of some success by looking for KR ones as well.
The oversize KMX ones (2mm over - giving 56mm) aren't listed anywhere, but I picked my mate up wrong, it's £6 for both sides (plus vat etc), so I'm going to give them a try.
If they don't do the 1s, I'll pass them on - you never know..........

before you fit them make sure they overlap and cover the ring peg that was the piston mod or part of it. The later rings cover the pin so it cant fall out unless the ring is broke. I always used to use stan stephens for parts he is pretty cheap and does after market pistons and stuff aswell as genuine if that helps
I wish i knew something about KR's so i was like knowledgeable about them and everything like what you lot are

KR250 pistons are 13001-1189, rings are 13008-5065. All assistance gratefully received !Tambo wrote:Have you got a part number for the KR rings ? Can't find anything on KR rings, except a couple of mentions on Jap discussion forums
I've ordered the oversize KMX rings as experiment for the KR1s - should get them early next week, will keep you posted.
Re a specialist for the KR rings, I've been searching for the bloke who supplied my JCM ones, but unusually the details have vanished Been doing loads of searching, and I'm pretty sure this Trevor Maddock bloke is the man, but the site listed isn't running - worth a call. The ones I got matched an off the shelf size, and I only had to form a peg groove. I'm sure even the one-offs weren't that expensive, especially if you go for a 'batch'.
Here's all the decent looking specialists I've found;
Trevor Maddock
Gemini
Townfield Lane
Mollington
Chester
CH1 6LB
www.piston-rings.co.uk
01244 851227
www.bradfordpistonrings.co.uk
www.nbcgroup.co.uk
www.crossmanufacturing.com
Remember to mention if it's nicisol bores as some ring materials don't react well.
Hopefully one of them will be able to do something at reasonable cost !!!
Let me know how you get on.
