KR1 Refurb.

Not really a project - but have been transferring everything from my KR1 / KR1S hybrid on to a new frame (old one had damage) since just before the winter.
Sprayed the new one and polished the main frame spars.
Everything has been checked/cleaned/sprayed/lubed as required as i went along. Replaced most of the manky fasteners and put good
a lot of neglected jobs over the years.
Almost finished now and looking forwards to starting it up and refitting the body work.
First time out the shed today

often wondered, is how much stiffer the KR-1S frame is to a KR-1
second moment of area says about 9.4% stiffer
the 0.7mm thicker main spars will add estimated 400g to the KR-1S frame weight

on my old B I filled the frame rib depressions with black vinyl strip (kitchen draw vinyl)
also around swingarm pivot
saw someone do it once on the original old e-box ZX-10
quick and simple mod makes the KR-1 frame look more different and 3 polished ribs will really pop.
since you are going with black accent vs polish

I got the vinyl at local hardware - resisted going for a wood veneer inlay look that was other choices on offer

Pity I couldn't find a 1S frame for my project- a 9% increase in stiffness is a worthwhile gain which more than compensates for the slight weight disadvantage.

factory frame mods to other bikes: road to race trim (such as YZF750) included welding plates on key areas to stiffen.
the 9% stiffness KR-1S advantage could be eliminated between the two by doing either of following to a KR-1 frame...
1. glue a 80 x 1.2mm sheet along the inner face of each beam
OR
2. glue/weld a 20 x 2.5mm strip along the top edge of each beam section
I suggest glue/bonding because unknown what weakening affect welding could do to the frame over large area.
BUT I wouldn't bother - less weight is better. Nothing wrong with a KR-1

Danny,
I think some nice mahogany veneer in the KR1 frame troughs would solve the stiffness issue and be aesthetically very pleasing

Passed on the veneer suggestion
Had it running - just a leak one carb due to an oval fuel pipe clip, replaced it and seems okay now
A few fairing repairs to do then should be ready for MOT
