After having a second crossbrace welded between the frame tubes, the rear portion was cut off:

I used a piece of 20 x 25 mm rectangular tube which had been cut off the subframe previously and trimmed to size. Waste not, want not. Unfortunately the local welder who was 5 minutes by bicycle away has closed and there isn't any other welding shop nearby so all welding jobs now involve considerable travel- bummer!
Weight of subframe is now 1.5 kg, a saving of 0.8 kg so far.

Yes the tandem swingarm is definitely one of the shortest i've seen. Yeah i imagine the trail numbers will be pretty big, but you can correct that by dropping the forks through the yokes to steepen the head angle if required.

Looking good! I wish i could find the time to get started on my project.
