There is a hole in the crankcase behind the pump which is supposed to stop the water getting into the box should the waterpump seal fail (not always the case as they can bloke up).
Other things that can cause water loss is a blown head or base gasket allowing water into the cylinder or out of the engine. or a leaking temperature gauge sender.
The worse case is a cracked cylinder/head (not very common on a standard engine).

nice one elf , it was the head gasket that was the problem so i have just spent two hours with a flat piece of iron and some valve grinding paste , flattening the barrels and head ,should be ok now , just wanted to know why there is two base gaskets on each side ? plus has anyone seen or drilled a hole in there oil filler cap on the clutch (mine has been ) any idea why . cheers

Drilled filler cap is a sure sign it is an ex race engine.
Two base gaskets probably mean the squish was a bit tight on a single gasket.

why do they drill it for ? also it has 2.00 oversize pistons is this a good thing , never had it going right since i have bought it due to head gasket

Race regs say it has to be lock wired into place.

why does it have to be drilled right through and not just through the top . nothing to do with releaving any pressure ? also because the barrels are 59mm and the head gasket is standard do i have to modify the gasket so there is no overhang ?

is the cap drilled through vertically???? oh dear, if you mean what i think you mean then a previous bodge artist has indeed thought for some reason that the gearbox needs a pressure release/breather!!!!!! i can only assume the crank seals have failed and sir bodgealot wants to keep her running.
if the drilling is how elf describe then this is purely a safety requirement needed for race scrutineers. prevents the cap coming loose and leaving oil everywhere. i hope its the latter. have never seen anything like the former but this can only mean one thing.

yes, out the crankase breather among other places. it could also start burning gear oil. could ypou post a pic of the oil cap??
