crankcase sealant

hi everyone, i built my kr1 engine back up a couple of months ago to find that the granville clear silicone gasket sealant i had used as soon as it came in contact with petrol went all stringy and came away from the joints
so the engine is now back in bits ready for another go, this time i have bought some permatex ultra grey ( nearly £8 a tube) after seeing that it is recommended on the pj engineering website, however after reading the back of the tube it says not recommended for cases in contact with petrol, so i'm guessing this will be no good once again? or has anyone used ultra grey with success?
if it is no good what do you guys use that is easily available?
cheers, maccas
