Hi all,

I wonder if i could pick your brains.....?

Ive recently put my kr-1 back together following an engine rebuild that i did which involved new pistons and rings,one new barrell and the crankshaft main bearings and oil seals being replaced. Was mightily impressed when she fired up after a mere half dozen kicks and ran really rather sweetly as best as i can tell(i freely admit to being no expert of course!)Now ive noticed something that troubles me somewhat. The engine is running sweet with the idle speed set and steady as a rock,all the gears engeage and disengage sweetly and the clutch likewise(again,thats as best i can tell,i cant as yet try it on the road)but ive noticed that at idle,it sounds mechanically quite noisey but this noise dissappears when the revs get above about 3000. Is this normal for a kr-1,or should i be concerned that somethings not quite right with the ol' girl?

Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated folks

How was the condition of the KIPS valves, did they have (too much) play in the barrels?

Less noise with the clutch lever pulled?

Some of the kips valves i replaced as the shafts were worn and i replaced alll the kips valves seals in both cylinder heads. No Charles,the noise remains the same whether the clutch lever is pulled in or out

the clutch-housing can make "ratle" noises when worn a bit, but that's not really something to worry about. allthough if it's the clutch it should disappear when you engage it, or just above idling.

make sure the flywheel is tightenned securly if not, the rattle can come from the flywheel bashing abainst the wood ruf key.

The flywheel appears to be good and tight,but if it was that,would it not be noisey throughout the entire rev range?

no, because when the revs are high enough, enough forces are put on the flywheel to keep it tight.

as janbros said. i can tell when a rotor is loose by ear. when the rotor is loose its distinctive and sound ruddy awful. im sure youd pick that up. the straight cut primarys can be noisy sometimes, mine make a whir type sound. i wouldnt worry about that. kr's are fairly mechanically noisy anyway. for peace of mind just go round all the bolts with a spanner to make sure.
