engine development and instrumentation question

another thread got me thinking about the benefits of fully instrumenting an engine in order to help the development process.
Has anyone tried to monitor the realtime manifold pressure, in cylinder pressure/temperature of the KR1S.
It seems that taking actual realtime data would take a lot of the 'guess work' out of the development process, and the data logged could potentially be used to produce better simulations to help development.
I have found several companies who supply this type of equipment, although I don't know the prices, however, I would imagine that Commercially Off the Shelf products these days would be much cheaper than the industry standard AVL/Kistler products I was using 10 years ago
