Side to side movement in output shaft causing dodgy shifting

I received my new gasket kit in the post today. It's absolutely fantastic! It's so nice to have all those rubber bits that I never imagined I'd be able to replace.

So I've started putting the engine back together and have hit a snag with the gearbox. I've replaced the bearings in there and the seals.
The output shaft seems to have a lot of side to side movement and it causes odd shifting. When in neutral I can push the shaft from the idler wheel side all the way home and get a reasonable neutral but if I push from the sprocket end the shaft moves a mm or so and engages a different gear. Do I just need to tap the needle bearing on the idler side in a mil or so?

I can take pictures if that's not making sense.
