My KR1

Post by Strangeengine »

Not sure if this link is going to work but here are some shots of my KR1 at Anglesey when I had a right laugh screaming around with Corky.
This was the first run out after about 18 months of blood, sweat and tears. But it was all worth it.

I hope the link works

Cheers Corky. I will see if I can sort it

The bike is basically an 89 KR1 which I bought blind from a mate up in Edinburgh. I was after a track bike as I had recently thrown my 748 up the road at Oulton Park and decided that was far too expensive. The KR1 was broken up and in three packing casese ready to go off to the States.
My mate told me that the bike was in running order when he split it 3 years before.
Needless to say when I got it home I was gutted to see the state of it. It was a mess. The forks were shot , as were the brakes, rear shock and all the linkages had welded themselves into a solid mass. Most of the plastics were split(I had hoped to be able to sell them to help finance the project)

2 years later and a lot of blood sweat and tears this is it-

Front and rear suspension by Maxton - The front is now a cartridge set up which they do for the mini twins. The rear is a revalved and sprung KR1s unit. The bike handles like its on rails and I weigh 16 stone with leathers etc

Engine rebuilt and then the rebuilt crank decided to eat the right hand big-end. Then had to put in new pistons & rings to match the replated bores courtesy of Motrac.
Frame forks and swinger satin black powder coat
Kr1S spannies
Various custom brackets and brackets
Loads of nickle plating
Custom Moto Gp style paint job

The bike is a joy to ride and I hope one day to be able to go around the twisties as fast as it is capable of. Just got to sort the carburation out as I was struggling to get it to rev out at Anglesey. Still a work in progress but I love it!!!

loverly bike, im also intrested to hear what you make of maxton forks as i raced at the weekend with untouched std forks and encountered all sorts of intresting quirks with the front end ranging frong been reluctant to turn after so much travel is used to almost rubbing the front of the belly pan throuygh down to the tyre coming in contact! the forks are dropped through the yokes and this along with the untouched oil are what caused the problems but at least i learnt how hard the bike was been pushed compared to rapid road riding. the forks will be over hauled but iu wouldnt mind having maxton do the job specifically for racing/my weight etc if its worth it. how much is a rebuild/revalve etc? thanx in advance. ps, the paintjob is pukka, lovin it!

Thanks Guys. Glad you like it.

The Friday and the Saturday were the first days I had ridden for 18 months since crashing the Duke at Oulton Park when I lost the front end big time. As you can imagine I was a bit rusty and tentative,as I was on a bike and track I had never ridden and brand new tyres!!
I have to say that the suspension is superb and really inspired confidence. Maxton set it for my weight and for track use so it is quite firm.
The bike handled like it was on rails and I was braking harder and later session by session and I never had one single moment the whole weekend
The suspension work cost me £550 and I think it was worth every penny!! Having said that I have never ridden a KR1 with standard supension so I have nothing to compare it to.
All I can say that this is one of the nicest handling bikes I have ridden and I haven't stopped grinning yet :D The tyres looked right at the end which I believe, is another sign that it was working properly.
I know quite a few guys who have had their bikes done by Maxton and everyone has noticed a big improvement over stock.

Cheers
Dave
