it sounds like the dreaded carb hight or shut off valves...set the floats to 20mm as per the manual...and while your float bowl is off blow down the fuel pipe and see what hight they shut off at...check out this thread viewtopic.php?t=2461
dont forget that the petrol tanks on these old girls r 17 years old and crap and rust has build up inside the tank so fit inline filters and it should stop future problems....

Hopefully once it stops leaking will be able to run a gallon through the engine with the new pro race 2 oil inside so its got the good stuff in and to get the good smell out
There's a few of us have had this problem. Best thing to do is to drain and clean your petrol tank, petseal the inside of it, and remove, check and clean the fuel tap and filter and fit new o-rings and seals in the tap if needed. pop a couple of inline filters in and clean out your carbs.
