barrells and pistons

Post by garye345 »

taken the topend off my original engine(kr1) today and think it could do with relining, slight wobble on pistons.then i did the same with a spare engine(kr1s) to see if it was better but the pistons in there have got A and C stamped on them :? in a spares box i have some pistons with B stamped on them,so are they slightly bigger so you go through them with out havin a reline the cylinder till you get piston slap with C ones?
to further confuse matters the kips valves are 1 size and not 1s that are in the 1s engine so does that mean they are 1 barrells and not 1s or can they be swopped between engines? :?
I used to be so care less,as if i could'nt careless.

was told that mark on pistons should match mark on barrel

eg.B piston to go with B barrel

guess they did when they were turned out the factory - but after 20 years :?

The original barrels and pistons as they came out of the factory were stamped size a to c. All new pistons are size B. If the barrel has be re coated then it will be honed to the correct B size. The original tolences were very slack when they were made.

The nicolisil tends to wear most at the exhaust port so have a look around there and if the plating has started to disappear then they'll need redoing. Once done they will be the correct diameter.

KR1 barrels are easy to spot. They have a bridge between the powervalve ports and the exhaust port and an extra boost port at the back of back of the cylinder.

Cranks are a straight swap. there is no difference at all between the two. KR1 powervalves in KR1S cylinders will loss you a few BHP as they are smaller and will restrict the gas flow. As KR1 power valves are harder to find then KR1S one's perhaps someone on here with a KR1 might do you a deal and a straight swap:?:

forgot to say that the differnce in the botom end is in the gearbox (apart from a difference in the number of crankcase bolts). Both gearboxes are the same in ratio terms but there r a alot of differences between to two. Basically you have to be very carefully in mixing the parts from the gearboxes and the gear selection mechanision (spelling). But again a KR1 gearbox will go straight into a S model , it's just that some of the individual parts can't be swaped.

Hope that helps.
