Soak the crank, small end bearings and power valves etc with a light coating of 2 smoke oil as you assemble the parts. Take your time getting the cylinders base and head gaskets fitted, as these are a bit of a weak area. I use a high quality gasket sealent on mine.
If your doing the crank cases as well I always check them for cracking (liquid penentrant inspection) and flatness on the mating surfaces especially if your rebuilding it after a crank failure. The cases are very light and thin and are easily smashed and /or knocked out of shape if the crank lets go. I repair them with a drimmel to remove cracks and casting defects and then devcom liquid titiaium to restore the original profile.
Thanks for that, I was "umming and arring" about gaskets versus sealant. I think ill use the gasket set i have, but use a good sealant for the base and head
Can you still buy the seals/bushes that sit in the top of the head for the power valves? mine are a little worn to say the least
Also, does anyone have a spare plastic seal that sits under the top yoke? mine is smashed to buggery !!

Use the standarrd head and base gaskets + sealant.
As worded your post says sealant not gaskets for head and base that is a no no.
