Carbon End cans problem

Post by headcoats »

I have some carbon end cans on the Hybrid and the carbon sleeving has worked loose on the rivets,so have gone wobbly after a scaringly short time

IMO they need a stainless or alloy sleeve fitted inside the carbon to strengthen them.
Has anyone else has a similar problem and what did you end up doing to fix it ?

Yeh, I have had the exact same issue with some end cans I bought of ebay. They were listed as nsr250 cans and to fit them all it took was re drilling the 3 bolt holes on the kr1s pipes so the ends sat straight. After that was done, I took the bike for a 50 kay ride and had to limp the bike home for the last 10 kay or so, cause the cans had ripped the rivets out.

I havent got off my ass and fixed the cans yet, put on kr1 pipes instead, but I was planning to get stainless rings about 2mm thick by 20 wide that fit tight inside the carbon sleeves, then squeeze stainless packing strap in between the end cap and outside of carbon sleeves. Re drill and then rivet. The reason that I am putting stainless inside and out is so the rivets are bitting on the end caps and stainess rings and the carbon sleeves aren't under any stresses other than the bitting force of the rivits.

I was really pissed of at the prick that sold em, but stupid me left the feedback before I tested them.

On a good note, they had an awesome note to them, and gave better response right through rev range.

They weren't "Dragon" cans were they? I've got a new set of those waiting to be fitted :?

yours hopefully,

Mike

They aren't Dragons but i think all carbon end cans are flawed

My solution would be to fit a stainless or alloy inner sleeve/tube inside the
carbon and then rivet that on .

I'm having mine re sleeved in alloy but hope to get some stronger carbon ones later on as i like the look of the carbon end cans

Just had an email off a manufacterer and they said the carbon should be glued onto the end caps and then riveted so the rivets aren't doing all the work :-k

I have made a few carbon cans(including the tube) and first failure was the rivets working loose. I think you will find the rivets are still tight but the hole on the carbon has flogged out. This is due to 2 things, first is the rivet heats up and melts the resin, second is the end may not have a 'band' around the end. That helps to spread the heat out. I bet the rivets head is say 4-5mm in dia? Fixes are a small band of stainless under the rivets going around the can and/or source some aviation style rivets that are about 12-15mm head size.
