The thing that every 2 stroke rider fears...

Post by robsa »

well, it happened to me yesterday, riding along the A27 into Brighton doing about 90... my KR1 heat seized. Cue rapid clutch pulling and lots of swearing.
I think the oil pump had blocked or something.
The engine is absolutely seized solid.

I was thinking I would probably strip it myself but was wondering if anyone could advise on what I would in all likeliness need to do to it?

yours, gutted and weeping int o his helmet,

Hi. Is it completely seized solid. Have you tried to put it in gear and free it?
Does sound like a compete strip down if you were tanking it.

Download the manual and get some idea, on stripping the engine. If the machine is seized and cant be freed up by kicking it over or as above. Start by removing the fairing. I would leave the engine in frame, drain coolant, oil, remove exhausts etc. Next remove head complete with kip valves and linkages all in place. A lot depends on what you will find looking down the bores!

Remove all base nuts and see what barrel pulls off! Slim chance it might not have seized on both! Next some penetrating oil, a rubber mallet, a club hammer and some wood. Depending on where the piston is, its a case of tapping the piston with the wood to bdc. Try to turn the engine over to lift the barrel up from the crankcase and chock up with wood between the barrel and crankcase. Finish with tapping the piston again as above - should free up!

You could take the engine out, but on a workbench this might be difficult to hold down if having to un-seize pistons in bores! Then engine out and dismantle and inspect for damage. You could do with taking some pics and up load them to this site?

Have you started stripping the engine yet? What damage have you discovered?
