crank and cases opinion

Post by sharky »

have stripped my engine ready for vapour blasting of the cases etc
I've noticed some rusting and minor scuffs on the bearing surfaces and crank webs

there are no scores, groves etc on the bearing or surfaces but rough surface around the crank seals

can someone give me an idea of its ok, good, bad, normal etc

cheers

When I opened ours up I saw the same thing, but after seeing a lot in the same condition I think its fair to say thats typical as far as the cases are concerned and nowt to worry about.
I would'nt worry about the rust on the webs either, are you planning to have the crank rebuilt sharky cos I think it would be wise. That was the general view when I asked for advise on the same subject.
here's how ours looked for comparison

quite normal. think the coating for the seals goes thjat colour with age ect. it feels like a fine finishing paper opposed to the bearing surfaces. think its like a key to hold the seals. cant explain very good but you get the idea. i have a crank with rust on the webs that needs reebuilding. anything thats un useable gets replaced anyhow, if the parts are available!!! bdk do the centre bit i believe?
