Balance shaft casing ? - also wanted

Post by sharky »

Will a KR1 balance shaft casing fit a KR1S, as i know the 1S has an extra cross headed screw not on the KR1?

Whilst trying to remove the casing (bloody cross head screw) to split the cases i have cracked the cover near the screw.

I know there are some KR1 covers on evilbay and wondered if they will still fit.... Unless someone has a 1S cover spare they wish to sell

Cheers

Mmm....

Strictly speaking the covers are machined with the cases so are matched. Ideally you shouldn't mix'n'match.

Having said that I have seen engines with that done.

KR-1S cover has additional bolt holes compared with the KR-1 but you could use the 1 cover but I wouldn't recommend it.

Mmm...

If you get it welded it will distort which isn't good. Might as well run another cover.
Only real solution is a new set of cases - but as said others have used other covers and it will probably be ok.

we dont know how bad the crack is...

but JB or a liquid metal would do for hairlines?

I would probably just have it welded with the balance shaft in place on the engine and all bolts done up to minimise any possible heat from welding distorting it

check against a pane of glass before and compare again after

Cheers for the info
Its only cracked around the screw hole and not on the main integrity of the case (on the very outside of the screw hole)

So as the integrity of the case is not in doubt but rather the outside of the screw hole, i guess JB weld will be fine and i just need to be careful when re-fitting so i don't recrack the jb weld area.

either that or don't put that screw in at all - The KR1 engine never had one so i'm sure it will be fine??

these cases have never been apart and the engine has only done 7000km so rather pissed at myself for butchering it.... by god it was stuck though as the screw burred over before it moved - including trying an impact driver which i was rather worried about using on the cases - had to drill the screw out in the end..

all threads are clean and clear on the crankcases so at least that's something

its just the crack on the casing around the screw hole that has annoyed me and that was my fault as i was getting the remnants of the drilled screw out and applied a bit too much pressure

i have used mix/matched balance shaft housing/cover with no issues. ideally it wants repairing with jb if the damage is minimal and doesnt effect sealing/strength.
