Engine Number

Post by Glyn »

Hi there, can somebody help on the following:

Looking at buying C1 model with the correct frame and wrong engine number according to the log book. How should the engine number look on the crankcase as this one starts ZX which seems odd for the model? What do the engine numbers range from on the S model as I would like to check this is a S engine and not a KR-1.

Also, could you give me some other "expensive" pointers to look for when buying secondhand like this

Thanks for your help

Regards

just wondering because theres not many C1 (KR) bikes unless youre possibly talking ZXR250C1
in which case you might be seeing someone who had doctored a ZXR chassis to match a KR registration plate (or somebody put a ZXR motor in a KR chassis?) - its way easier to alter a frame number than take the motor out to alter the engine number (on a KR)

but no KR motor will start with ZX....
the chassis will be KR250B-000xxxx or KR250C-00xxxx
and the engine for any KR-1s will be KR250BE-00xxxx

Thanks for the reply - this is what I thought

Having worked for Kawasaki UK for 23 years (even through the KR-1 years!!) engine numbering does not take this format. My H2 is H2E etc etc and my Z1 Z1E etc etc

The guy who has the bike says the engine number reads KZX250G3X which again is not the format I would expect - as you say it should read KR250BE-007884 which the log book qoutes.

Will have to take another look at it to check - the guy may need glasses

Just as a matter of checking where is the engine number located? The details have ben taken from the space on the right of the engine top which is just visible below the bottom of the frame

Thanks agin for your help

tucked in hard between top of clutch cover and frame spar (closer swingarm pivot than headstock!)
find the top of the clutch cover
the engine number is stamped on flat part of the crankcase behind
the clutch actuator arm and beneath the frame spar
- so between the right hand carb and the clutch cover tight under the frame rail

that high engine number (log book) would make it a C3 model (with Grey brake calipers) so should look like...

Hi again

Taken another close look at this engine number as it reads as follows:

KZX250G3X - it looks genuine in some much that it has been messed with it would seem.

Can you throw any light on this - could it be an R engine??

Regards

Hi Glyn,

How about a photo of it so we can all have a good look?

Cheers

A search for KZX250 came up as a Kent KZX250-3. A Chinese disposable 250 twin 4 stroke. Looks like someone swapped motors in that bike.
