engine development and instrumentation question

Post by scooble »

another thread got me thinking about the benefits of fully instrumenting an engine in order to help the development process.
Has anyone tried to monitor the realtime manifold pressure, in cylinder pressure/temperature of the KR1S.
It seems that taking actual realtime data would take a lot of the 'guess work' out of the development process, and the data logged could potentially be used to produce better simulations to help development.
I have found several companies who supply this type of equipment, although I don't know the prices, however, I would imagine that Commercially Off the Shelf products these days would be much cheaper than the industry standard AVL/Kistler products I was using 10 years ago

Most of that has already been done for you. A EGT gauge and/or a knock sensor /row of lights with a Ignitech will sort your engine at the track. A iphone app called Harry's Lap Timer can do a hell of a lot of data logging.
Having an array of sensors is just pure development work for a engine dyno, we already know what works and what doesn't, trick is to apply it to each engine. Then find out if the engine likes it or not and what will break first.
