Hi... Just picked up a KR1-S for my other half

Post by gytr_r1 »

Hi all, I figured I had better introduce myself as over the coming months/years I'll be trawling through this great forum looking for info relating to the KR1...

I'm an Aussie, living in Nth Queensland, and owner / administrator of a new forum for riders from our region (www.nqriders.com) which has at time of writing 116 members (not bad for 11 weeks operation  )

Anyway, I've been riding for about 22 years, and recently convinced my partner she should go for her license. She's been riding dirt squirters for years, but has never bothered to do the road thing, and has been happy to sit on the back of the R1. However finally she caved, and we picked up a mint condition KR1-S.

The test ride brought my childhood flooding back (I owned a highly modded RZ-250 as a teenager - chambers, carbs and so on) and stepped off the bike with the biggest grin. The sale was easy, my other half saw the grin and said yes.

She's now addicted to power band... loves the bike. She spent most of Saturday on the seat, being shadowed by myself and another friend.

As my memory has faded over the years, I'll need some guidance regarding tuning and parts suppliers. especially given we need to replace the clutch and brake levers (the previous owner has put a shortie clutch lever on it, and shaped the brake lever to suit his hands), and get new exhaust gaskets as well as source a heavier rate spring for the rear shock (the previous owner was also a little fella)

It's been resprayed... so here is a picture.

Cheers

Bruce

Hi,

Nice bike.

I originally bought our first KR1 for my wife.

Whilst we were out for a ride I used to find us swapping bikes quite regularly :P .

Just found it much more fun in comparison to big heavy four strokes.

Not a four stroke in the "stable" now.

You'll have to park The KR1s at the front of your garage to give you an excuse to nip up the shops on it  .

G'day Bruce,
Looks good mate. Youll find HEAPS of info here on tunning the KR, and they're generally a top bunch of blokes.
Parts like pistons and such are a little harder to get, but you can always make a list put a post in the wanted section, and someone will be able to help you out. Most of us also have a bike or 3  for spares, and if a wreck pops up cheap, I'd advise you to grab it. Levers should be available at your local Kwak dealer along with the exhaust gaskets.
There's a couple of other members in Qld, and a few more down here in Vic.

Cheers, Scott.

Thanks for the warm welcom guys.

A mate of mine apparently knows a fella here in town who has a 'project' bike, however with interest rate on the rise is looking to offload the box of parts. So I may be able to source some spares if I am lucky.

On a side note, is there anythything to watch for? The bottom end is new, and the bike has done 38,000k's, the last 2 years as a race bike (still reemaining registered). Compression does seem good and it doesn't mis-fire, however I think it is running rich as it is strong, but not as strong as I would expect, and for semi-synthetic oil, there's a lot of residue on the stingers..

The R1 is off in a couple of weeks time for a remap, so I'm thinking it may be worthwhile seeing if they are interested/capable of tuning 2 strokes.
