Grooved piston rings?

Post by ScottaKR »

I finally decided to check out the rings that came with the RG150 piston kit I bought to measure up for a 300cc conversion and was surprised to find the rings have radial grooves in the surface that contacts the bore surface. The top ring also has a radial groove on the inside face as well as a (semi-flat) spring steel ring that seems to be meant to go in the top ring groove underneath the ring :?:
This may have something to do with the fact that they have "racing" printed on the top face :-k but it's something I've never heard of before. I can only assume that the grooves are there to reduce friction on the bore surface, but I'm left wondering about the spring steel rings true purpose and wheather there would be any detrimental side-effects using these in a road bike.

Any thoughts people?
