I bought some replacement pistons (Makita) and a set of rings, believe they are Rik, in the kit there are two normal 'round' rings and one multi-sided ring (oil ring??) can anyone enlighten me to what or where the multi-sided one is for.
Is the bin a good answer??

Could it be the expander ring ?
The LC Boys leave it out on their Mitaka's

That sounds like the "expander" ring from what u are describing. It fits in the bottom ring groove on the piston before fitting the piston ring.
Hope this helps

Could be a "universal" kit for 2 or 4 stroke's

ie the third ring would be your scraper ring ????
someone will probably come on & say im talking through my "ring"

All the expander rings I ever came across are a wave type shape and are really thin. The RDs have them but I never fit them because they can break being so thin and then they overlap each other and jam the ring itself. I never had an issue leaving them in the box. Less weight too

every bit helps

it is the expander i had to ask the same question from kev at ard, he said it didn't matter if you bothered or not but road use he would and trackday he wouldn't bother.
i didnt use them and they have been no trouble but i did fit them under the bottom ring in my mates 2ma and it also has been no trouble.

Many thanks for the replies, as correctly suggested it is the expander ring, which fits underneath the 'normal' lower ring.
Thanks again guys!
