Is it the KIPS Valves?

Post by Cexley »

Just finished top end rebuild on my recently aquired KR1, which had seized KIPS valves when I bought it. I've changed rings, small ends, all 4 KIPS valves, the KIPS valve seals and the KIPS linkages.

Anyway, the bike now 'rattles'. It sounds like small ends or piston slap and is a constant 'tinking' (almost a pinking sound) when cruising along in the mid range. If I open it up everything chimes in and the bike revs out normally, however the noise comes back with a vengeance on the overun at high revs. Is this small end and/or piston slap or the KIPS valves?

I have read at other sites, that the KIPS valves on the KDX Motorcrossers make a hell of a racket and that it is 'normal'. As I have never had a KR1 before, and I don't know anyone else with one, I have nothing to compare mine to. Can you guys on the forum help me out? I'd hate to strip the whole thing down again only to find it was the KIPS valves rattling all along.

If it is the KIPS, should the cables and linkages have any slack in them, cos although mine are adjusted correctly, they seem lose, which may be why they are 'chattering'.

yes there should be slack in cables, all seizes up if too tight.

powervalves do make a bit of a racket at times, you can see them move I think, when blipping.
