Motul 600 Ester Oil

Post by neil68 »

Managed to get a couple of bottles of this, just wondered if it was "safe" enough to use it.It has API TC,JASO FC,ISO-L-EGD "rating.Would i be better to just empty the 2 stroke that's left in the tank(semi-synth) or could i mix it in beside it.I'm still using the oil pump,it also states that it is a injector or pre mix oil.Cheers.

If it is a castor mix, you must flush the whole system out as castor and mineral and/or synthetic oils will congeal and block everything up. Also, castor oils change their molecular properties when put under extreme heat and load - hence being used in high stress race engines. So you really don't want it mixing with other oils.

Ideally, you should flush the engine as well. I have switched my TZR Reverse Cylinder and KR1 to Castrol A747 after top end rebuilds. Both bikes love it and really have the old Castrol R smell when being caned. I've severely thrashed my TZR on track days and it really is the business.

There is a lot of controversy around using castor oils in injection systems, as they are quite high viscosity (compared to injection oils) and designed for premix. However, I have run both on injection. The only thing to watch is you don't use the bike in cold weather as these oils turn to syrup below 5C.

If you ring up the oil manufacturers, re using it in your oil injection, they will just quote what it says on the label or refer you to the tech sheets and then tell you if you trash your engine, don't come complaining to them. I was happy to take the risk as I have had plenty of 2-strokes trash themselves on TTS etc and none since switching to A747. Bl@@dy expensive, but worth it!

Ignore my castor based waffle. Just checked Motul Data Sheet and it is a fully synthetic for both injection and premix, so technically, you should be able to just sling it in with whatever synth you have been running.

However, if it was me, I'd still flush the old stuff out or at least poor some of the 'old' in with the 'new' in a glass jamjar and leave a couple of days to see if there is any reaction. It is all a 2-stroke has for lube, so I'm very wary of mixing any oils, regardless of the manufacturers 'claims'.

I used to fly 2-stroke rotax powered microlights for 10 yrs and I saw a lot of engine failures happen after people switched oils. Call me paranoid, but I never did enjoy falling out of the sky any more than a full on seizure down the main straight [-o<

If you have an airline (or a decent stirrup pump) you disconnect the oil lines at the pump and pull the injectors out of the carb rubbers. A light squirt of air up each line will fire the oil out (and boy does it shoot a long way, so be ready for it). The oil tank comes out if you remove the airbox and battery. I use parrafin to wash out tank and main feed pipe to oil pump. Give everything a good blow out and reassemble. Fill with your fresh oil and follow the bleed instructions in the manual to get oil to run into the pump.

You will need to drain most of your fuel out of the bike (or run it onto reserve before you do this job) and sling in some of your new oil to form a small amount of premix (in my case, I don't bother and use a syringe to fire some of the new oil into the pots and into the backs of the carbs) and fire up the bike. You will see the new oil pumping up the 2 injector lines pretty quick. Hold oil pump control in max position until oil is up to the injectors and being taken in by the engine. Turn off engine, fill up your tank with straight fuel to dilute the remaining premix and the jobs done. Good luck!

IF emptying oil tank completely...
follow the SERVICE MANUAL's procedure for bleeding the oil pump. just incase an airlock/blockage occurs in line or pump
youre safer just to pour NEW oil into oiltank once its very low and take it easy until the new stuff pumps through completely.

(PREMIX... the beauty of modern oils is they stay miscible/dissolved in petrol for very long periods.) unlike castor types

?? Ester refers to the molecule oil is synthesized from - Castor oil is derived from plant extract. ??

You could possibly blend 800(premix) into base 600(injector) (these are no longer current Motul designations) to perhaps raise the viscosity so its not pumped out so quickly (KR pretty thirsty on injected 600 - watery)
