water pump seal

Post by SP_BOTT »

Hi, never realised the seal was a 'mechanical' type, just got my casing off ready to clean and paint, and found the pump casting/impeller etc coated with rust.

Do the seals wear or are they quite robust (use this type at work)
I've had trouble with RD ones in the past and wondered if the KR ones need replacing as often?? The shaft was quite rusty, but it's cleaned up really well, with no ridges, just some pitting under the impeller on the end.

You should be ok providing it hasnt gone brittle,if they leak coolant comes out that semi circular hole in the lower part of the case.
Rust,so its been left or run with no coolant, hope it all cleans up ok. :D
my h***a RS had been left for many years with no coolant when it was stored in japan, the impeller was rusty but it cleaned up fine, strangely the crankcase had some water/coolant in but it never rusted the crank :?

Thanks, yes doubt there's been any coolant in the engine for a while (off road for 10 years) the whole pump area was coated in the brown stuff, I did think the impeller was plastic until I cleaned it all up, and found it was alloy, dunked it in some brick cleaner for a few mins :)

Yes the seal is quite springy still and the face is nice and flat, but I have just bought a new one now just in case it leaks/as a spare.
